Mach Loop Cad West - The Official guide to Cad West

Over the past 6 months, I have collated video and pictures from my many trips to the Mach Loop. I have created this film to offer a first-hand guide to the Cad West area of the Mach Loop. Cad West is definitely the easiest viewing area to find, park and walk to. It's arguably the busiest part of the Loop too.

Mach Loop Cad West - Viewing areas

Cad West has many areas to view aircraft from. From quite low down to pretty high up. Each area offering different perspectives but all areas are very rewarding (on busy days!)

Cad West LOWER AREA - The lower you are on the mountain the closer you are to the aircraft. The lower you are though means you'll be shooting slightly up at the aircraft.

Cad West HIGHER AREA - The Higher you go on the mountain the further away you are from the aircraft. But going higher up means you'll be mainly firing down on the aircraft. This is a very unique perspective. The higher up you go, the longer the lens required for that perfect shot! I recommend a 300-500mm lens from the top.

Cad West Mach Loop Just about Photography?

The Mach Loop isn't all to do with photography. As you can see in my video just seeing the military aircraft buzzing through the Loop is totally exhilaration.

PLEASE READ: (just a few pointers)

1) Aircraft fly through the Loop Mon-Fri only (anytime it's light)

2) THERE IS NO TIMETABLE (Ignore the one found online)

3) There are no guarantees of seeing aircraft
(I have been 4 times this year and drew blanks)

4) The weather is unpredictable (It's a mountain)

5) Aircraft DO NOT fly when visibility is poor (Fog/Low clods etc)

  1. Fantastic and informative videos, I am in the process of planning a trip to the Mach Loop, what time of the year is generally the best as far as the weather is concerned ?,which is the easiest to get to as far as climbing is concerned CAD East or West, I have a mobility issue with a fused right ankle which limits movement !!!!! Regards Barry

Hi Barry, I would say they're both just as easy. Cad West is easier to park though. The start of the climb (which is sufficient) is a very easy incline. The weather is more likely to be better in the summer months but the hills are generally busier with people. Before heading to the Loop I would also suggest that you join one of the many popular "Mach Loop" Facebook groups and gauge how much traffic is flying through the loop. The Brits aren't flying through the Loop very often these days and this has dramatically reduced the amount of aircraft flying through. You'll get better update info from the FB groups if you're lucky enough to find somebody that will answer your questions sensibly! Good luck Gary
