General Course Outline

The 2 day "Portrait Workshop" covers every aspect of Portrait Photography. You will learn enough skills to make you a more proficient photographer or get you up and running as a Professional Portrait Photographer.

This course will teach you how to create various studio lighting setups including Low-Key Lighting (dark backgrounds and shadows) and the very popular Hi-Key Lighting (bright white backgrounds). Hi-Key lighting is used by all the top studios around the world.

Portable lighting (Speedlites etc.)
You will learn how to create really moody lighting simply by using 1 speedlite. This style of photography is great for artistic effects and looks stunning when applied to baby photography, Mother and Bump and Lingerie. I expand this training to 2 speedlite’s. This will replicate studio lighting which can be applied for use at home or on location. This type of lighting is excellent and enables the photographer to quickly setup a studio environment in a client’s house without the need to plug anything in!

You will have the opportunity to direct and photograph a female shoot and a kids shoot
(2 Children).

All training will take place at our luxury Elland studio 2 minutes from J24 of the M62

Portraiture

The mark of a good portrait photographer is the ability to consistently produce high quality images - getting control of light is a combination of experience, expertise, instinct and that is what this course is all about. Learn to develop your style - whether this is creative and experimental, fun or formal.
You will learn all you need to know about studio lighting from scratch, learn typical 1, 2 and 4 light setups. Learn low and high key lighting techniques.

Learn Off Camera Flash. Learn to create studio lighting outside, we use a nearby vacant and dissused property. You'll be amazed at the results, I guarantee it!

All standards welcome...

The first hour of this workshop is spent teaching how to shoot in manual mode. Whilst this isn't a must, it's a great way for us to ensure all standards of students grasp the fundamentals of taking full control of their camera. Shooting in manual is probably a lot easier than you think and it will amaze you just how easy it is to take full control!
If you are a competent shooter and can already shoot in manual then this time can be used as a refresher!

Photographing people in all walks of life is hugely popular yet it is usually done poorly. We train you to recognise the quality and direction of the light, to implement creative composition, to understand poses, backdrops, lens perspective, but most of all what sells!

No previous experience necessary

"Just completed the 5 day course and loved every minute of it, this couple ooze inspiration, so being a complete beginner on the technical side of photography I came away with a wealth of knowledge and buzzing with inspiration, Gary and Paula couldn't have crammed anymore information into five days and couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating, I am now hoping to book the five day landscape course, I honestly can't believe how far I have come and delighted I stumbled across this training course to explore my passion for photography"

"Just returned from 5 Day Wedding and Portrait Workshop, run by Gary and Paula Gough, at Shootsmart. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the information was presented in a light hearted manner, with plenty of jokes and stories from Gary and Paula, which helped get the information across. One day was a mock wedding, held at the lovely Hazelwood Castle, with two lovely models, and plenty of posing and setup advice, and I've come away with some fantastic pictures, which if they hadn't come off my card I would never have believed they were mine.Other days were spent in the studio, outside with off camera flash and some amazing Photoshop sessions.I've come away with a lot more knowledge, and look forward to attending other courses. Definitely recommend the courses if you want to do more than point and shoot with your camera"

I did both the Love Your SLR (15th March) and the 5 Day Wedding/Portrait Course (2nd - 5th March) and both were excellent. I bought my camera sometime last year and pretty much never used it as I didn't really know what I was doing. I'd read a couple of books in the past but nothing beats hand on experience and Gary give you that experience in droves. From photographing items such as shoes, flowers, wedding dresses etc, to people in poses in a mock wedding at Ripley Castle (North Yorkshire), to people in a studio, to off camera flash location shoots around Elland, to using and understanding light meters, The list goes on and on.I had a fantastic time at shootsmart and I would like to thank Gary and his wife Paula who kept us well fed and everything running to schedule, And Kelly who is their assistant/stand in model.I can't recommend them highly enough.
